Trip Reports John Hagen's Fly Box Product

Enjoy a day of fly fishing at Boxwood Gulch Ranch or Long Meadow Ranch.  Three miles of private water managed for fly anglers.

Large populations of fish – good natural reproduction and a well-managed stocking program ensure quality fishing year-round.  The largest portion of the fish population consists of fish in the 14-20 inch range.  Fish that are 20 – 26 inches are not uncommon, with some that will tip the scales at 8 or 9 pounds.  Rainbows, Browns, Brook Trout, Cutthroats, and Cuttbows, make up the diverse population.

An ideal place to get together with a group of business associates, friends, or family members.

We specialize in entertaining small business groups, usually 4-12 people.  We can accommodate any group size between 2 and 20 anglers.  We also offer many schools and classes throughout the year for those who want to increase their knowledge and skills.

Lunch is always provided.  Something from the grill is usually served in the clubhouse at Boxwood.  We enjoy a picnic-style lunch at Long Meadow.

We provide any gear that you and your group may need for the day – waders, rods and reels, leaders, tippet, flies, and so on.

Each ranch offers a variety of different types of water to fish.  There are very easy and friendly spots for the beginning angler, or those that are less mobile, as well as some water that will challenge and reward even the most skilled angler.

Catch and release.  Barb-less hooks only.

Our guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled.

 The fishing is consistently fantastic.

Boxwood Gulch.

Boxwood is a privately owned ranch, located on the North Fork of the South Platte River near Bailey Colorado.   A 60- minute drive from Denver along highway 285 will take you to one of the nicest stretches of private water in the state.  Nearly one mile of big pools, runs, riffles, pocket water, and a meandering oxbow side channel await your arrival.

Boxwood has big holding water, with big fish.  Most of the trout at Boxwood are in the 16 – 22 inch range, with some that will stretch the tape to 26 or 27 inches, and will weigh in at 8 or 9 pounds.  Hundreds of fish in the legendary Bridge Hole, alone, can keep anglers busy for most of the day.  Don’t ignore the other, well-known holes and stretches.  The Big Bend, Hubie’s Hole, The Convention Center, Oxbow, Feeder Stream Hole, Sandy’s Bend, Deer Camp, Road Pocket Water, Lion’s View, and Monster Hole, all provide different challenges and rewards.

The river here splits up into two sections.  We can easily fish right through run-off while others in the area are scrambling for higher ground.  In fact, some of the biggest fish on the ranch are landed right during the highest run-off flows.

The clubhouse here is an ideal gathering place for lunch, or a quick meeting.  This has become a great place for the businessman to entertain associates and customers, as well as strike up new relationships with potential clients.  Money well spent.

Cost is $270.00 per person.  Price includes access to private water, guides, any gear that your group may need for the day – waders, rods and reels, leaders, tippet, flies, and so on.  Lunch is also provided.  We serve something from the grill at Boxwood.  Grilled meats complimented with fresh vegetables and salad, are the usual fare.  No baloney sandwiches here.  Soft drinks and water are always provided.  Beer and wine can also be served, if appropriate for your group.

Check out our trip reports for more details on what to expect.

Longmeadow Ranch.

Long Meadow is a private ranch located just upstream from, and adjacent to Boxwood Gulch Ranch.  Just one hour from Denver, near Bailey CO, Long Meadow offers nearly two miles of the nicest dry fly fishing water in the state.  The North Fork of the South Platte meanders through a huge hay meadow on most of the ranch.  Split channels offer completely different fly fishing situations.  Long runs and riffles, beautiful stepped pools, and big, heavy pocket water make up most of the water in the main channel.  Some of the man-made structures and diversions are loaded with fish, making it easy for anglers of all skill levels to enjoy success.  The challenging side channel winds through a maze of willows and can present problems and rewards for even the most skilled angler.

Many fly shops, guides and “authorities” would lead you to believe that most trout are caught on nymphs these days.  Guides that don’t offer dry fly fishing when it is available are either not knowledgeable, unskilled, or just plain lazy.  Don’t be misled!

The dry fly fishing at Long Meadow is superb.

Fish in the 12-18 inch range make up the majority of the population at Long Meadow.  It is not uncommon to land several fish over 20 inches.  Most of them are very willing to take a dry fly.  Most of the time the fishing at Long Meadow is very friendly for the beginning angler.  It can offer some of the finest fishing available for the most talented.  During very low water it can require a very skillful approach.

There is no clubhouse at Long Meadow, but a shelter and picnic table are provided.  We serve a picnic-style lunch up here.  An assortment of fresh sandwich meats, breads, condiments, fruit, chips, cookies, smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail, are the usual offerings.  Soft drinks and water are always available.  Beer and wine can be served with lunch, if it is appropriate for your group.

Check out our trip reports and get a realistic idea of what to expect at Long Meadow.

Cost is $230 per person, and includes access to private water, guides, any gear that your group may need for the day – waders, rods and reels, leaders, tippet, flies, and so on.  Lunch is provided.

Don’t let the discounted price fool you.  The Upper Meadow, Graduate School, The Weir, Tres Pipes, Willow Bend, The Chute, Confluence Hole, Welcome Matt, and Rainbow Staircase, offer diverse opportunities for those just learning, or for individuals who are most skilled.
