Trip Reports

Although there are times when we can fish Boxwood or Long Meadow in the winter, the days are fairly short and the weather can be cold and nasty. We are also busy with waterfowl hunting until mid-February.

We start fishing in March!

The days start to lengthen out and the river begins to wake up a bit. The first insect activity that occurs is the Little Winter Stone. This is a small, dark, slate-colored stonefly, usually in sizes 16 and 18. Small, dark nymph patterns are usually the answer. There will be some dry fly activity, with rising fish, on the warmest days in the afternoon. The water is cold, and so are the fish. They won't move very far to take the fly. Sight fishing to an 8 pound Rainbow will keep a fisherman warm!

Take advantage of lower Winter Access Fees, and surprise some fish that haven't seen too many flies for a while.

These two veterans wanted to get a head start on the the rest of the pack and take advantage of the lower winter rates at Boxwood, and exceptional late winter - early spring fishing.

Each landed approximately forty fish. The biggest were between six- to eight-pounds.

Although we didn't get photos of the largest, fish like these 18-20" are available all day long at Boxwood.
See you guys again in April!

You don't need to travel to New Zealand or Patagonia for a chance at a special fish like this!

Jason landed this fish below the "Deer Camp" at Boxwood. This creature of the night came out in the open during the low flows of March.

Twenty-seven inch Brown Trout.

Guide Tom W. lands a nice 'bow for Jason.
Jason releases a fat rainbow.

Gary G. is assisted by Tom W., the guide, as he lands this colorful Rainbow trout.

A while later, again with Tom's assistance, Gary hooked and landed this large Tasmanian Rainbow.

This fish is lovely. It's also back in the river, waiting for you to try for it soon.
